Game Summary

Thanks to a solid performance by starting pitcher John Maine, the Mets took the rubber game of their weekend series with the Marlins and beat Florida 3-2. The Mets got some key hits in the

Pitching

John Maine broke out his new changeup and used it to stifle the Marlins bats today. In six innings pitched he allowed just 3 hits, 2 walks, and didn’t allow a run. He struck out 5 batters, and lowered his ERA to 3.75 for the season. He was also very efficient with his pitches and got through the first three innings with just 36 pitches thrown. Maine continues to improve, picking up his fifth win of the season, and has become the next best starter on the team after Johan.

Pedro Feliciano pitched a scoreless inning in the seventh, lowering his ERA to 2.25 on the year.

Things got a little scary in the eight inning when J.J. Putz walked a batter and allowed two hits, prompting Manuel to replace him with Bobby Parnell. Two runs came around to score reducing the Mets lead to 3-2, Parnell struck out Jorge Cantu for the second out, and Jeremy Hermida lined out to deep left to end the threat. J.J. Putz continues to struggle, and he may be on the verge of losing his setup job to Parnell.

Frankie Rodriguez came in to finish up the ninth and picked up his 14th save and seal the win for the Mets. He struck out the side and received a nice ovation from the crowd.

Batting

Angel Pagan, Fernando Martinez and Omir Santos each drove in the Mets runs with doubles, and put the Mets up 3-0 going into the eighth inning

Omir Santos nearly missed a homerun, but his run scoring double has now given him eight ribbies in his last 10 games.

Additional Info

Mets outfielder Angel Pagan left Sunday’s game with right groin discomfort after chasing a ball in the fourth inning. He is day-to-day. He initially got the start after Carlos Beltran was scratched with a stomach virus.

The Mets are now 17-9 at home and 15-9 against the NL East. They have won 11 of the past 14 games at Citi Field, and finish the month of May with a 19-9 record.

John Maine succumbed to the same stomach virus that has wiped out Carlos Beltran, and was removed in the seventh inning., but should be okay for his next start.
