There’s been some activity in Mets land today with Terrance Gore having been signed to a minor league contract.

The 31-year-old – who actually celebrates a birthday today – will now report to the Mets training facility in Port St. Lucie.

Gore’s addition comes on the same day that the team received bad news on starting outfielder Starling Marte, who departed Tuesday’s game against the Padres following an awkward slide into second base.

Per Jon Heyman, Marte will have an MRI on his left quad today with a trip to the injured list seen as likely, which means that the Mets will be down their base-stealing slugger for the foreseeable.

With Travis Jankowski still on the IL and with Dominic Smith having been sent down to Triple-A, the Mets are light in the outfield all of a sudden.

That’s where Gore comes in.

The 31-year-old is an absolute speedster and he has 40 career stolen bases despite only having 77 plate appearances. That kind of speed on the base paths could come in handy if Marte is out for a while.

Gore has a .224/.325//284 slash line in his career, while he has three World Series rings having represented the Royals, the Cubs and the Dodgers. He was last seen on the Braves’ World-Series winning postseason roster in 2021.

His other two World Series rings came with the Royals in 2014 and 2015.

If the Mets do receive bad news on Marte this week, then it is likely that Gore will act as an insurance policy in the outfield due to his speed and ability to steal bases at a high rate.
