The New York Mets have signed 33-year-old right-hander Louis Coleman to a minor league contract.

Coleman most recently pitched for the Detroit Tigers (3.51 ERA, 41 strikeouts, 24 walks over 51.1 innings/51 appearances in 2018), before being granted his release this spring.

The right-hander spent the first five years of his MLB career with Kansas City (2011-2015), pitching to a 3.20 ERA with a 2.38 strikeouts-to-walks ratio and 1.25 WHIP over 152 appearances, all in relief, and spent one tumultuous season with the Dodgers in 2016 (4.69 ERA over 48 innings).

Coleman split the 2017 season between Triple-A Louisville (Cincinnati) and Triple-A Reno (Arizona), pitching to a 2.25 ERA over 50 relief appearances. He uses a four-seamer and sinker in the 88-91 range and throws a slider about 45% of the time.

Louis Coleman’s career mark of 4.10 walks per nine innings is a bit of an eyesore. But with the resume he’s put together when he’s on top of his game, a low-risk deal could end up paying dividends.

We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
