The New York Mets announced they’ve signed outfielder Matt den Dekker to a minor league deal with an invite to major league camp.
Den Dekker, 30, split his time between the Triple-A affiliates for the Miami Marlins and Detroit Tigers last season. Overall, he played 79 games hitting .250/.322/.441 with 17 doubles, four triples, 8 homers, and 29 RBI.
He also went 1 for 7 at the major league level for the Tigers in four games. He’s slashed .234/.316/.354 in parts of five major league seasons with his best season offensive season coming in 2015 with the Nats when he had a .800 OPS.
On the defensive side he has 11 DRS in only 800 major league innings spread over all three spots.
The Mets drafted the talented defensive center fielder in the fifth round of the 2010 draft. He was traded in March of 2015 to the Nationals for Jerry Blevins.
Matt gives the Mets much needed outfield depth with only five outfielders currently on the 40-man roster and no experienced options in Triple-A.
