Iglesias, 33, last played in the majors for the Rockies in 2022. Before that, he had stints with the Red Sox, Angels, Orioles and Reds, and spent most of his career in Detroit. He came up with the Red Sox in 2011. A lifetime .279/.319/.382/.701 hitter, Iglesias’ best years may not be behind him. Although he struggled to crack a big league team in 2023, he hit .292/.328/.380/.708 in hitter’s friendly Coors Field in 116 games.

Never one for power, Iglesias is a contact-bat, defense-first player, a common thread in the players David Stearns has been targeting this offseason. With the infield set, Iglesias provides depth along with the new addition of Joey Wendle and is a more experienced Luis GuillormeWhile he’s a natural shortstop, he can also play second and third.

The signing is yet another depth piece for the Mets this offseason, and while not the splashiest, Iglesias provides much-needed backend support for everyday players in case of injury.
