The New York Mets have announced that they have signed middle infielder Danny Espinosa to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

Espinosa, 31, last played in the major leagues in 2017, when he hit .173/.245/.278 with six home runs, 31 RBIs and 30 runs scored in 93 games and 295 at-bats for the Tampa Bay Rays, Seattle Mariners, and Los Angeles Angels. He spent last season in the minor leagues for the Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Most recently he played in the Mexican Pacific Winter League for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo. In 32 games and 143 at-bats he slashed .242/.357/.417 with five home runs, 17 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

Along with Luis Guillorme, Espinosa gives the Mets another depth option at shortstop in case Amed Rosario suffers an injury.
