With the first pick in the Brodie Van Wagene regime, the Mets selected prep third baseman Brett Baty from Lake Texas High School with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2019 Major League Baseball draft.

Here’s write up from Baseball America on the 19-year-old:

One of the best pure hitters in the draft class, Baty brings 70-grade raw power to the table with impressive strength and plus bat speed. He also has an advanced approach at the plate and a feel for putting the barrel on the ball. In every batting practice Baty takes, his power stands out.

The pick has a slot value of $4,366,400.

Baty, left-handed hitter, is currently hitting over .600 this year with 19 homers and 50 RBI during his senior year.

The third baseman is 6’3” and 218 pounds, he turned 19 years old last November. Scouts believe his defense has improved enough this spring to potentially keep him from shifting to first base and MLB.com says he has a 60 grade arm.

Baty has a commitment to the University of Texas but told Zach Braziller of the New York Post that he feels ready to go pro.

The Mets pick second round pick will be at No. 53 and will be announced on MLB Network tonight. The pick has a slot value of $1,370,400.
