Omar - Quintanilla

According to Mike Puma of the Post, the New York Mets did not have to pay Omar Quintanilla the rest of his $800,000 contract because they designated the shortstop for assignment before a deadline set in his contract.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York disputes that Quintanilla was demoted ahead of a specific deadline as a money saver, as Kyle Farnsworth was.

However Rubin does confirm the move saves the team money, but that it’s more the result of paying Wilmer Flores $500K rather than Quintanilla’s $800K.

That saves the Mets roughly $1,639.34 per day, which adds up to roughly $200,000 over the rest of the season.

I would side with Rubin on this, who has a very good grasp on these types of financial and contractual moves.

Flores has played just one game in the last eight days.
