Jacob deGrom threw a successful side session on Monday in Miami and is penciled in to make his next start on Wednesday, manager Luis Rojas said.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner was scratched from his start on Friday in Philadelphia with neck soreness. The issue was minor at the time and progressed nicely.

Monday’s bullpen was the last hurdle to clear.

“After seeing the side, all he needs to do is show up [on Wednesday],” Rojas joked.

deGrom has allowed six earned runs in 22.0 innings across four starts this season. Walker Lockett started in his place against the Phillies and gave up five runs in 6.0 innings.

Here’s more on the state of the Mets’ banged-up rotation.

Peterson back on track

David Peterson said he experienced general soreness after his last start on Thursday, but noted it was no different than the typical wear-and-tear he feels after pitching.

Though any health-related developments with Mets starters raises eyebrows, Rojas said Peterson is cleared and at 100 percent going into Tuesday’s game against the Marlins.

“He went through the whole process in between his outings as far as throwing the side and everything, so he’s good to go for us tomorrow,” Rojas said.

Peterson’s three victories lead all National League rookies this season. Outside of deGrom, he’s been the Mets’ most reliable starter in 2020.

Not bad for a lefty who hadn’t pitched above Double-A entering the campaign.

Matz not a lock for next start

Rojas explicitly stated that the team is not committing to Steven Matz for his next start on Thursday.

“What we have ahead of us is to work on some things, fix some things, and put him in the best situation [for] him to succeed,” Rojas said.

Matz is winless through five starts this season. His 9.00 ERA is second-worst among 60 qualified major leaguers.

On Saturday in Philadelphia, he allowed six runs on five hits despite cruising early on.

“He has three good innings, one bad one, and we’re targeting where the mistakes are, where the errors are, and what we can make better for him,” Rojas said.

Lockett could step into Matz’s spot temporarily or the team could turn to rookie Franklyn Kilomé, who is currently with the team in the bullpen.
