The New York Mets have recalled left-handed pitcher Stephen Tarpley to serve as the 27th man in Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Tarpley was initially claimed off waivers by the Mets this past offseason from the Miami Marlins. Last year, Tarpley missed a month of the season with an oblique injury, but posted a 9.00 ERA in 12 appearances for the Marlins.

The 28-year-old made his major league debut back in 2018 for the New York Yankees, where he would spend his first two seasons in the show. In 43 career games, Tarpley has posted a 6.65 ERA, however, he has also struck out 58 batters in 44.2 innings.

Although Tarpley’s ERA has looked ugly on the stat line so far in his young career, we have only seen a small sample size of what he can do as he hasn’t thrown more than 24.2 innings in his first three seasons.

Tarpley posted a 5.68 ERA this past spring training with the Mets, but the coaching staff was impressed with his stuff as he competed for a spot in the bullpen.

After starting the regular season at the Mets’ alternate site in Brooklyn, the team called on Tarpley to be an extra arm as they are set to “play two” on Tuesday. The southpaw also has three career saves and could be used in this situation later today if Edwin Diaz is needed in Game 1 of the doubleheader.
