The Mets on Sunday recalled right-handed reliever Drew Smith from Triple-A Syracuse and optioned fellow right-hander Trevor Hildenberger to Triple-A Syracuse.

Smith, 27, was originally acquired by the Mets from the Tampa Bay Rays in 2017 for first baseman Lucas Duda. Smith debuted with the Mets the following season and logged a 3.54 ERA in 27 games.

Unfortunately, Smith underwent Tommy John surgery and missed all of 2019, but returned in 2020 to pitch in eight games.

Smith was sidelined earlier this season with right shoulder soreness he endured during Spring Training, but was activated off the IL and assigned to the alternate site at the end of April.

With the Mets’ bullpen carrying the weight of the last two ball games, they had to get some fresh arms out there for a day game after a night game.

Hildenberger, 30, has appeared in just two games for the Mets this year and has a 15.43 ERA, though it comes in such a small sample of 2.1 innings pitched.
