The New York Mets took down the Brewers 4-2 in a possible preview of a National League playoff series matchup on Monday. The Mets tagged Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff for three runs in the seventh on their way to their third win in the last four games.

The Mets sent Tylor Megill to the mound. Pushed back a day due to yesterday’s doubleheader the rookie completed five strong innings with seven strikeouts against a Milwaukee team that had won 10 of their past 11.

Megill allowed a double to Willy Adames and hit Omar Narvaez with a pitch to put two runners on in the first. With two outs he caught Tyrone Taylor looking on a 95 mile per four fastball.

Megill walked the leadoff man in the second, Jace Peterson, then wouldn’t allow a runner until the fourth inning. The Mets were stifled by the recently named All-Star Woodruff his first go through the order. Woodruff was perfect for his first nine batters with five strikeouts.

Milwaukee gained the early lead off Narvaez’s solo home run in the fourth inning. New York tied it in the bottom of the inning with some small ball.

In the bottom of the fourth, Brandon Nimmo doubled to leadoff, Francisco Lindor sacrificed Nimmo to third, and Dominic Smith‘s fly ball to center field was deep enough to bring Nimmo across the plate.

The Mets brought Aaron Loup in for the sixth inning against the heart of the Brewers lineup. He struck out Christian Yelich, Adames grounded out, and Narvaez struck out.

The sixth was Loup’s lone inning. Seth Lugo pitched the seventh. Copying Loup, Lugo struck out the first batter, got the second batter to ground out, and the third to strikeout.

New York battled in the bottom of the inning to put three runs on the board. Lindor led off with a walk, Smith singled, and Pete Alonso doubled to drive in both runners. Jeff McNeil grounded out to move Alonso to third. The struggling Michael Conforto roped a single to right to drive in the third run of the inning and force Woodruff out of the game.

Milwaukee couldn’t respond with Trevor May on the mound in the eighth. Luis Urias singled with two outs. Yelich made the final out on the next pitch.

May now has 10 straight scoreless appearances and his season ERA is 3.13.

The Mets hoped for insurance in the eighth after their first three batters reached base safely. Those hopes were dashed by former Met Hunter Strickland entering in relief. Kevin Pillar flew out and Alonso hit into a double play to end the inning.

Nimmo led the Mets offense with two hits while Lindor walked twice and had a sac bunt.

Edwin Diaz pitched a rocky ninth. Adames and Narvaez reached before an out, Taylor singled to drive in a run. Diaz, lacking control, set the following three batters down to escape the ninth with a save and Mets win. Peterson and Hiura struck out with Jackie Bradley Jr. flying out.

The Mets and Brewers play again on Tuesday night at 7:10 p.m. Jacob deGrom is set to take the rubber against Brett Anderson.
