The Mets’ win on Monday versus the Braves put together their best offensive performance of the season, getting 18 runners in base and scoring eight runs. It only took them 10 games to break out!

That was done behind the strength of Brandon Nimmo, who launched two game-tying home runs in consecutive at-bats in the fifth (three-run) and seventh (solo) innings. He also extended the Mets’ lead to 8-5 with an RBI single in the eighth.

Overall, Nimmo reached base five times and drove in five. But the offense extended beyond the lead off hitter.

  • DJ Stewart got his first hit of the year (!!) with a massive two-run homer to center that broke a 5-5 tie late.
  • Starling Marte opened scoring with an RBI single, scoring Pete Alonso.
  • Jeff McNeil reached base three times and scored twice.
  • Brett Baty had three more hits, bringing his average to .303. He’s 8-for-18 his last four games.
  • Francisco Alvarez was the only batter to not reach safely at least once all game.

The offense needed this output against the Braves’ lineup, which put them ahead 4-0 in a blink and nearly mounted a comeback against the Mets’ shorthanded bullpen.

Carlos Mendoza called the game “a very good team win,” as the offense finally broke out and the pitching staff pieced together 27 outs.

The Mets entered the day last in the national league in runs and batting average. While still sitting in the dregs of the league in both categories, the output against one of the best in the leagues was encouraging. But, as Nimmo, the star of the night, said after the game: “You’ve got to show up tomorrow and win the next one.”
