The Mets have placed Trevor May on the injured list without further information given. May will once again hit the IL as the team tries to navigate through the injuries to their bullpen.

As May heads to the IL, the Mets have called up right-handed reliever Bryce Montes de Oca from triple-A Syracuse. Montes de Oca was a ninth-round pick for the Mets back in the 2018 MLB Draft.

Montes de Oca has posted a 3.90 ERA for the Mets Triple-A Syracuse team. He also played 14 games with their Double-A affiliate and posted a 3.12 ERA. So far for 2022, he’s averaging an ERA of 3.61 on the year. He’s also posted 72 strikeouts and 35 walks between both teams for 2022.

Montes de Oca will join a bullpen that is gearing up for a postseason run. While Adam Ottavino and Edwin Díaz have already solidified their positions on the team, it seems as if the next role is up in the air due to the inconsistency of Trevor May.

May has struggled to stay on the field and has also struggled while on the mound, pitching to a 6.11 ERA on the season. He is in the final year of a two-year deal that he signed last offseason for $15.5M.

The Mets will need a bit of stability come October, and Montes de Oca is in the position of a lifetime to earn a role with the team.
