The Mets now have a standard five-man bench after Danny Muno was recalled to replace injured lefthander Steven Matz who went on the DL.
But none of the five reserves have a batting average above the Mendoza line.

- Kirk Nieuwenhuis batting .091 (4 for 44)

The collective batting average for the current five-man bench is .165 (55 for 334).
The collective batting average for Mets pitchers is .166 – one point higher.
Prior to Friday’s game, manager Terry Collins tried to defend the current bench, telling reporters by that Nieuwenhuis, Monell and Campbell all did well in the last series at San Francisco, and he was right in a way.
On Monday, Nieuwenhuis had a big double in the 9th inning and scored on Monell’s two run double that gave the Mets a 3-0 win. On Wednesday, Campbell went 2-for-4 with two runs and a two-run homer that sealed a 4-1 victory.
When asked if the Mets can win with this bench, Collins replied, “We not only can, we will, because those are the guys we have.” (ESPN New York)
Lets hope so. The Mets bench was a big reason why they took two out of three from the defending World Series champs, and they’ve got to keep contributing in order for us to stay within striking distance of the NL East division or a Wild Card.
