The New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates were set to commence their first series of the year at 12:35 p.m. on Monday in a Labor Day matinee. Those plans, however, have been foiled by Mother Nature.

The two teams will now start their three-game set on Tuesday after Monday’s game was rained out. The teams will make up the game on Wednesday in a split day-night doubleheader. Game 1 will start at 12:35 p.m. and Game 2 follow it at 6:35 p.m.

There’s no word as to what this will do for the Mets’ pitching plans for the series.

Taijuan Walker was set to start Monday, followed by Jacob deGrom and Chris Bassitt. If Walker and deGrom are both simply pushed back one day, it will give both starters one week between their last starts. The Mets have an off day on Thursday giving them an opportunity to not need a sixth starter in their rotation following a doubleheader.

The Mets will look to rebound against the Pirates after a disappointing series at home versus the Nationals. The team lost two of three games after taking two of three from the Dodgers, the best team in baseball, in the previous series.

Their offense in particular struggled this weekend, mustering only nine runs across three games–including just one in each of the last two games–against one of the worst pitching staffs in the majors. Nationals starters Patrick Corbin and Erick Fedde each gave up just a single run.

This is part of a larger trend for the Mets’ offense, which has scored just over three runs per game over the last two weeks.
