A day after the Mets optioned Akeel Morris to minor league camp, the Mets made some more substantial cuts as they continue to trim down their roster.

Top pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard, catching prospect Kevin Plawecki, and pitchers Jon Velasquez and Cory Mazzoni were all optioned to minor league camp after Friday’s game.

Syndergaard had actually been slated to pitch Saturday against the Detroit Tigers, but Sandy Alderson said that he took a ball off his ankle and will be replaced by Steven Matz instead.

With deadline for injured 40 man players accruing service time coming today, the potential for an injured ankle may have sealed Syndergaard’s fate today.

This ends any speculation that he would break camp with the Mets, which really was never going to happen anyway.

The good news is we saw some excellent flashes from Thor and Plawecki this spring and we’ll be seeing both of them at some point in 2015.

The Mets announced more cuts today, assigning pitchers Cody Satterwhite, Tyler Pill, Matthew Bowman, Gabriel Ynoa and Hansel Robles to minor-league camp. That brings the number of players in big-league camp to 49.

Of the five, Pill and Satterwhite were having solid Springs, tossing 3.2 and 3.0 scoreless innings respectively.

*** After the game, Dilson Herrera and Wilfredo Tovar were also optioned to minor league camp.

The team has announced that OF Brandon Nimmo, SS Gavin Cecchini and C Xorge Carrillo were reassigned to minor league camp today.

Nothing surprising here, more cuts will occur sometime after the weekend as the Mets continue to trim down the roster from about 55 players still in big league camp.

Nimmo was hitless in four at-bats and missed nine games with a jammed thumb.

Cecchini and Carrillo impressed this Spring in very limited play.
