On Tuesday morning, the Mets announced they’ve optioned right-handed relievers Paul Sewald and Jacob Rhame to minor league camp. They’ve also reassigned RHP Arquimedes Caminero, UT Dilson Herrera, top prospect SS Andres Gimenez, C Ali Sanchez, OF Rymer Liriano, and OF Tim Tebow to minor league camp.
Rhame and Sewald came into camp on the 40-man roster with a chance to compete for the Opening Day bullpen, but both struggled with a 10.50 ERA and 4.50 ERA respectively. Both are coming off disappointing 2018 seasons as well. Caminero, on a minor league deal, struggled as well giving up six earned runs in 3.1 innings.
Gimenez, 20, is either the Mets No. 1 or No. 2 prospect depending on the publication. The talented shortstop hit .250/.333/.500 in nine games this spring, though he did show some nerves at times.
Tebow went 4-for-15 with a walk and three strikeouts. The former NFL quarterback is destined for Triple-A Syracuse.
