New York Mets team sources told Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News that they expect pending free agent manager Terry Collins to retire after the conclusion of the 2017 season.

However, Collins has yet to make a decision known to the Mets about whether he will continue managing in 2018 or not.

Collins, 68, is the longest-tenured manager in Mets history, having steered the team through 1097 games, in which the Mets are 547-576.

Ackert also reports that the Mets like the idea of the next manager being more analytical and sabermetric savvy.

There’s been a lot of chatter about who the next Mets manager will be next season, but it seems more and more likely that it’s going to be someone very familiar to the organization.

Bob Geren, the former Mets bench coach and current Dodgers coach in the same capacity, is a favorite of general manager Sandy Alderson and could return to mind the store next season, opines Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Terry Collins contract is up at the end of the season and it’s becoming increasingly more likely he won’t be back next season.

Geren, who managed the Oakland Athletics from 2007-11, owns a career 334-376 record at the helm. He was with the Mets organization from 2012-15 before heading out west last season to join the Dodgers.

The Athletics didn’t have a winning season under Geren, finishing below .500 in three full seasons and at the benchmark in one.
