The New York Mets officially re-signed Edwin Díaz to a five-year, $102 million contract.

The extension has an opt-out after the third year, a full no-trade clause, and a sixth-year team option. If Díaz returns for his sixth year, the deal would total six years and $122 million.

Not only did Díaz receive the highest contract in MLB history given out to a reliever, but he also received the highest signing bonus given to a reliever at $12 million. Both records were previously held by Aroldis Chapman back when he received an $11 million signing bonus when he signed his five-year, $86-million contract. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Díaz wanted to top Chapman’s signing bonus and the Mets wanted to use deferrals to lower costs towards the luxury tax.

With the deferrals, Díaz will have an AAV of $18.6 million. That price tag still is more than notable relievers Liam Hendriks ($18 million), Chapman and Kenley Jansen ($16 million), and Ryan Pressly ($15 million).

When asked about bringing back Díaz, Billy Eppler said, “He’s a tremendous competitor, has a burning desire to be the best, and possesses the stuff to compete with any hitter in the league. We are thrilled he’ll be anchoring our bullpen moving forward.”

Díaz earned every penny of his new deal last season with the Mets. He saved 32 games in 35 opportunities and struck out 50.2% of the batters he faced. Díaz also held batters to a ridiculous slash line of .160/.230/.216/.446.

Before the off-season if was reported that the Mets were going to focus on re-signing Brandon Nimmo and Díaz. With free-agency beginning on November 10, the Mets got ahead of schedule and re-signed their closer before any team could speak with him. Now, the focus presumably will shift to Nimmo and Jacob deGrom.
