Brian Stokes Trade?
According to the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers had serious discussions with the New York Mets in recent days about relief pitcher Brian Stokes, the Free Press has learned, but the chances for a deal fell dramatically when the Mets determined that Stokes was likely to make their Opening Day roster. The Tigers are believed to be shopping outfielder Marcus Thames who has been linked to the Mets in the past.
Last Bullpen Spot Still Undecided
It looks like Brian Stokes and Bobby Parnell are essentially locks to make the opening day roster, and that the final spot will be occupied by either Fernando Nieve, Elmer Dessens or Darren O’Day. I’m putting my money on side-armer and Rule 5 pick, Darren O’Day. I’m glad to see that Parnell won a job and that we get to see some of that potential that we’ve been hearing about for the last two years.
Marlon Still Hanging On?
Adam Rubin writes that Marlon Anderson appears in no danger of being released, according to a team insider. The Mets’ bench now looks like this; Marlon Anderson, Ramon Castro, Alex Cora, Jeremy Reed and Fernando Tatis. Nick Evans may initially be included as well, at least until the Mets need the room for their fifth starter.
Redding May Start Throwing
Tim Redding, who will open the season on the DL because of shoulder issues, could resume throwing off a mound next weekend. Redding is throwing on flat ground at 150 feet. Once he increases the distance to 180 feet and repeats it a few times, he’ll be cleared to step onto a mound.
