Andy Martino of the NY Daily News reports that the Mets aren’t expected to pursue free agents Robinson Cano or Jose Abreu according to “major league sources familiar with the team’s thinking,” .
A high-ranking team official recently told the Star-Ledger’s Jorge Castillo that Alderson’s scouts came away “impressed” with Abreu’s power. But obviously (and predictably) not that impressed.
An unsurprising development on both fronts for a team that say’s they’ll spend this offseason, but in the end will only kick the tires on anyone desirable before bowing out with a tip of their hat.
When the “we’re impressed” rumor came out a few days ago, I laughed out loud and said, “uh oh, here it comes, the Mets are about to disengage,” and so they have. The only hint of interest in Abreu came from an anonymous source? And only to say, “impressive power”? Wow, really Mr. DePo? Laughable.
MetsBlog immediately responds to the news with a just as predictable statement:
“In regards to Abreu, the more I think about it, the less sense it makes to bet 10% of the budget on a position the Mets can already gamble on with Lucas Duda, Ike Davis, Josh Satin, Daniel Murphy and Wilmer Flores.”
That’s code for… Well, you know…
