I don’t know what the plan is, but so far all this new regime has done is shed themselves of a bunch of players.
At the arbitration deadline, the Mets non-tendered both John Maine and Sean Green. But surprisingly, they also non-tendered Chris “The Animal” Carter who the Mets acquired in the Billy Wagner trade.
The Carter thing is kind of a head-scratcher simply because he wasn’t even arbitration eligible and would have only made the league minimum of $400K.
Anthony DiComo writes that Maine finished his Mets career with a 39-32 record and 4.17 ERA over parts of five seasons, with nearly two-thirds of the victories coming from 2007-08. In 2007, his best year, he finished 15-10 with a 3.91 ERA after posting a 2.63 ERA the previous postseason. But shoulder troubles cropped up late in 2008 and haunted him for the rest of his tenure.
I’m starting to get the sense that Alderson and company want to rid themselves of as many Mets from the Minaya regime as they possibly can. I’m convinced that more players will be shed via trades and that nobody is safe.
Since the season ended, the Mets have now rid themselves of Fernando Nieve, Hisanori Takahashi, Raul Valdes, Henry Blanco, Pedro Feliciano, John Maine, Chris Carter and Sean Green.
