The New York Mets announced on Friday afternoon that Brian Schneider will be the new quality control coach. The position was created prior to the 2019 season with Luis Rojas holding it. Rojas was elevated to manager last month after the Mets decided to part ways with Carlos Beltran.

Schneider, 43, will serve on the club’s major league field staff as a conduit between the front office, coaching staff and players on issues including game preparation, strategy and analytics. Schneider will also take on the catching instruction, a role that Tony DeFrancesco was going to do in 2020. The former big league catcher spent four seasons as the Marlins’ catching coach.

The former Met was hired earlier this offseason to be the manager of the Triple-A Syracuse Mets.

DeFrancesco – Triple-A manager for the Mets over the last two seasons – was named the Mets first base coach in December of 2019. With Schneider taking over catching instruction, DeFrancesco will now assume outfield coaching and baserunning instruction duties.
