Several New York Mets players and coaches arrived early down in Port St. Lucie this week to work out as pitchers and catchers officially report in three days.

Setup man Jeurys Familia is coming off a disappointing campaign but is highly optimistic about the 2020 season.

As reported by SNY on Wednesday, the reliever was quoted saying the Mets had the best bullpen in the league with the addition of Dellin Betances joining Familia, Edwin Diaz, Seth Lugo, and Justin Wilson.

Pat Ragazzo of Metsmerized also spoke to Familia in late January, who expressed his excitement on the team’s outlook.

“We have to stay healthy. If everyone is healthy, we are going to have a great season,” said Familia who believes the Mets can reach the World Series this year.

Following the 2017 season, the Mets cut ties with long time head trainer Ray Ramirez. Since the change was made, Familia is a fan of the new regime and feels their new methods have cut down the risk of injuries on the roster.

“The difference is that we have to show up to the trainer’s room everyday no matter what. They check you every day to make sure you are ready to play. If not, they give you a day or two off which makes a difference instead of missing 2 weeks,” said Familia.

As seen in The New York Post last week, Familia has shed 30 pounds this off-season and is down to a trim 240, as opposed to his 270 pitching weight in 2019.

Familia had a career worst season posting a 5.70 ERA and 1.733 WHIP after signing a three-year $30 million deal with the Mets last winter.

Per The New York Post, Familia blames his disappointing year on the weight gain, which messed up his rhythm and the timing of his delivery. Not only has he dropped the weight, but he also has a familiar face on the coaching staff returning this season to help recover his groove on the mound.

“My bullpen coach Ricky Bones has always been there for me and knows me better than anyone else. He came back to the team in June and started working with me on some of my old routines, where I’ve had previous success,” said Familia.

If the Mets plan to get back to the postseason for the first time since 2016, they will rely heavily on their bullpen. For this to occur, they must receive bounce-back years from Familia and Diaz.
