The Mets took a step back on Thursday afternoon after a few steps forward, missing a prime opportunity to sweep the Colorado Rockies in their quest to get back to relevance this season.
With the score tied 2-2 in the eighth, Craig Kimbrel gave up a controversial go-ahead grand slam to Jake McCarthy. The ball looked like it might have been foul, and the Mets challenged, but the home run call stood. The Rockies held on for a 6-2 win in the series finale.
Christian Scott was sharp in the thin air of Colorado, despite getting a quick hook by Carlos Mendoza. The young righty allowed only one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six.
Scott was pulled with two outs in the fifth inning for Huascar Brazobán, who, in the next inning, let the Rockies tie the game 2-2, walking two before giving up an RBI bloop double.
The Mets only scored in the second inning and amassed just six hits in the game. Their two runs came on a sac fly by Andy Ibáñez and an RBI single by Tyrone Taylor, which put New York ahead 2-0. But the offense went quiet the rest of the game.
When asked why he pulled Scott so early, Mendoza said he had a “number of pitches in mind”.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Scott kept the Mets ahead with a slim lead in a tough pitchers’ park, throwing 53 of his 82 pitches for strikes in the no-decision.
