Players of the Week
Batting – JT Schwartz, 1B Brooklyn
Schwartz led a big offensive week in Brooklyn going 12-for-26 with five runs and four RBIs.
The 22-year-old first baseman has put together a solid campaign in 2022, slashing .278/.359/.404 with five home runs and 25 doubles. Schwartz has an advanced approach that results in an ability to draw walks while hitting for a high average. However, he’s yet to demonstrate the type of power that would typically be seen from a 6-foot-4 first base prospect. If Schwartz can utilize his frame to generate more pop without sacrificing his ability to get on base he could prove to be a prospect worth keeping an eye on in the Mets’ system.
Pitching – Dominic Hamel, RHP Brooklyn
Hamel was superb this week for the Cyclones, striking out nine over seven shutout innings.
After a red-hot start in High-A, Hamel struggled a bit in August with a 4.57 ERA in 21.1 innings (despite holding opponents to a .158 average). The young right-hander looks to be back on track with his electric performance to start September. Hamel’s fastball sits in the mid-90s and he’s shown continued development with his secondary pitches. If he can continue this development while maintaining strong command, Hamel will continue to rise up organizational rankings.
