Sunday was the final game for the top four Mets minor league affiliates, and winning was the topic of the day. Although Triple-A Syracuse’s game was canceled due to the field in Norfolk being deemed unplayable, Binghamton, Brooklyn, and St. Lucie all picked up wins, all carrying positive momentum into the All-Star break.
Marcus Semien began a rehab assignment in Double-A, belting a home run while going 2-for-3 in a 10-5 win. Luis Robert Jr. continued his assignment as well for Double-A, also tallying two hits in six at-bats.
Elian Peña showed a positive sign for St. Lucie, tallying two hits, after what has been a poor start to July for the Mets No. 6 prospect. The 18-year-old will look to continue some positive momentum into the second half of the season.
Double-A
Binghamton Rumble Ponies 10, Hartford Yard Goats 5
- CF Luis Robert Jr.: 2-for-6, 2 R, RBI, 3 K
- 2B Marcus Semien: 2-for-3, HR, 3 RBI, K
- DH Chris Suero: 2-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB, 2 K
- LF-CF Jose Ramos: 2-for-4, R, BB, 2 K
The hitting story for the Rumble Ponies on Sunday is vast, but promising games from two rehabbing major leaguers are the biggest story. Semien made his first rehab start back on Sunday, and promptly hit a three-run home run. On the other hand, Robert Jr. made his sixth rehab start, and third for Binghamton. In those contests, he is batting .304 with a .795 OPS, and adding a home run along the way. Both will return to Queens during the All-Star Break, and will take batting practice off of another rehabbing Met: Clay Holmes.
- RHP Danis Correa: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 K
- RHP Zach Peek: 2.0 IP, 3 H, R, ER, BB, 2 K, W
- RHP Brendan Girton: 3.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
- RHP Justin Armbruester: 1.0 IP, H, 0 R, 2 K
- RHP Carlos Guzman: 1.o IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K
Correa has had a blistering start to July, settling nicely in Double-A after bouncing around three levels to begin this season. In 4.2 IP, Danis has yet to allow a run with nine strikeouts. However, his .235 average against and a 1.29 WHIP show that this trend may not last, but the 26-year-old will enjoy the performance as it lasts.
High-A
Brooklyn Cyclones 5, Wilmington Blue Rocks 3
- SS Mitch Voit: 0-for-3, BB, K
- 3B Yonatan Henriquez: 0-for-4, R
- C Ronald Hernandez: 2-for-4, R, RBI, K
- DH Daiverson Gutierrez: 2-for-4, RBI, K
After an excellent June, Voit’s offensive numbers in the first half of July. The 21-year-old is slashing just .161/.333/.355 across 31 at-bats, with two home runs and four RBI. His saving grace in this slump is that he is still getting on base and wreaking havoc once he gets there, working seven walks and stealing five bases.
- RHP Frank Camarillo: 2.0 IP, H, 0 R, 2 K
- LHP Nicolas Carreno: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K
- RHP Parker Carlson: 1.2 IP, H, 0 R, K, W
- RHP Bryce Jenkins: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 2 K, S
Jenkins is off to an excellent July for Brooklyn, sporting an ERA of 0.00 across 4.2 IP. The catch in that is that the right-hander has yet to allow a hit in those five appearances and has only allowed a single base runner. With the clock ticking on the 25-year-old, a promotion to Double-A makes a great deal of sense before the season’s end.
Single-A
St. Lucie Mets 8, Jupiter Hammerheads 2
- SS Elian Peña: 2-for-5, 2B, R, 2 RBI
- DH Mike Tauchman: 1-for-3, R, BB, HBP, K
- 3B Antonio Jimenez: 0-for-5, R, RBI, 2 K
- C Julio Zayas: 2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB
Peña had a good Sunday, tallying two hits out of the three-hole. The 18-year-old is hoping that Sunday’s performance will help to turn around a poor July to this point after the All-Star Break. In July, Peña is slashing just .229/.270/.257 with just one extra-base hit and two RBIs.
- RHP Jose Lopez: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, W
- RHP Ernesto Mercedes: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
- RHP Joe Scarborough: 1.0 IP, 0 R
- RHP Tyler McLoughlin: 1.0 IP, 2 BB, 2 K
- RHP Miguel Mejias: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K
Mejias has had a good start to July. Across five appearances and 5.2 IP, the 21-year-old has a 1.59 ERA with a 1.59 WHIP and .238 average against. As St. Lucie heads into the second half of the season, Mejias and others will look to continue working on their control, as promotions to Single-A could be in order for those who show command.
