Syracuse Mets (53-77) 6, Rochester Red Wings (60-70) 5

Rochester native Danny Mendick’s heroics carried the Syracuse Mets to a 6-5 walk-off win over the Rochester Red Wings Tuesday night. The 29-year-old infielder went 2-for-5 with two doubles and drove in five runs. With the Mets trailing 3-1 in the fourth inning, Mendick stepped up to the plate and smacked a bases-clearing double off the left-center field wall, giving Syracuse their first lead at 4-3. He capped off the big night by ripping a clutch two-run walk-off double into the right-center field gap, winning the game for Syracuse in the bottom of the ninth.

Along with Mendick, outfielder Brandon McIlwain had a two-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, and an RBI base knock in the fourth inning. In 27 games with Syracuse, the 25-year-old outfielder has produced a .258/.415/.495 slash line with seven doubles, five home runs, 17 RBIs, and eight stolen bases.

Denyi Reyes yielded four runs (two earned) on eight hits across six solid frames. The 6-foot-4 right-hander struck out four and did not issue a free pass. It was Reyes’s fifth consecutive start in which he had hurled six-plus innings for Syracuse.

Reliever Eric Orze struck out the side in a scoreless seventh inning. The 26-year-old right-hander has a 6.15 ERA and 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings in 33 appearances.

DOUBLE-A

Hartford Yard Goats (54-70) 6, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (67-58) 1

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies had their seven-game win streak snapped on Tuesday night, losing to the Hartford Yard Goats by a final score of 6-1. Binghamton went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded a total of 12 bases runners on the evening. The Ponies lead the Portland Sea Dog by five games for a playoff spot.

Second baseman Jeremiah Jackson hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the first inning to give Binghamton the early 1-0 advantage. The 23-year-old collected three hits on the night and has reached base in 18 straight games. Jackson is hitting .323 with two doubles, three homers, ten RBIs, and seven walks during that span.

JT Schwartz was another bright spot in the Ponies’ lineup. He reached base three times in the contest with a single and drew a pair of walks. The 23-year-old first baseman has safely reached base in 18 out of his last 19 games. Schwartz is hitting .319 with seven extra-base hits, 17 RBIs, and 13 walks during that span.

Right-hander Blade Tidwell took the ball Tuesday evening against Hartford and struggled with most of the damage done against him coming via the long ball. Tidwell allowed three home runs and five runs over 3 1/3 innings. He issued four walks and struck out five. The 22-year-old served up back-to-back long balls in the fourth inning, ending his night at 79 pitches. Entering last night’s contest, Tidwell had tossed 10 1/3 scoreless innings in his previous two outings.

HIGH-A

Brooklyn Cyclones (63-63) 4,Wilmington Blue Rocks (53-72) 2

 

BOX SCORE

The Brooklyn Cyclones defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks 4-2 Tuesday evening and moved past the Jersey Shore BlueClaws atop the North Division standings with five games remaining.

Ryan Clifford extended his on-base streak to 13 games when he connected with his 22nd homer of the season in the bottom of the third, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 early lead. Clifford has hit homers in back-to-back games. He added an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth, giving Brooklyn a 4-0 advantage. The 22-year-old left-handed slugger has four homers with 11 RBIs and has drawn 12 walks in his last 13 contests.

Alex Ramírez went 1-for-4 at the dish with an RBI and swiped his 20th stolen base. Ramírez has had a tough year offensively, posting a slash line of .226/.313/.323 and a subpar OPS of .636. However, it has not affected his play defensively. The 20-year-old outfielder notched his 11th outfield assist of the season, throwing out a runner at home plate trying to score from second base in the first inning.

19-year-old Jett Williams had a rough night at the plate, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, but he still found a way to reach base as he drew his 98th walk of the season. He has more walks (29) than strikeouts (28) in 31 games for High-A Brooklyn.

Relief pitchers Dylan Hall and Jeffrey Colón combined to toss 4 2/3 scoreless frames of one-hit ball while striking out seven and walking none. Right-hander Colón retired the side in order in the ninth to notch his first save of the season. 

LOW-A

St. Lucie Mets (42-82) 11, Daytona Tortugas (54-70) 7

BOX SCORE

The St. Lucie Mets defeated the Daytona Tortugas 11-7 in an offensive outburst Tuesday night. The Mets managed 13 hits and went 6-for-17 with runners in scoring position. All nine batters in the lineups reached base.

The Mets’ huge inning came in the third as twelve men went to the plate and scored six times, with a bases-clearing triple by Vincent Perozo highlighting the inning. The 20-year-old backstop is tied for the team lead with 18 doubles and is second with 45 RBIs.

Marco Vargas had a terrific game at the plate, reaching base five times in last night’s contest. The 18-year-old infielder had two hits and three walks while driving in a pair, stealing a base and scoring a run. Vargas is 8-for-26 (.308) with four RBIs, five walks, and three stolen bases in his first 31 plate appearances at the Low-A level.

Right-hander Jack Wenninger made his Low-A debut for St. Lucie. The 21-year-old allowed two runs on one hit over 1 1/3 innings. He issued two free passes and racked up three strikeouts. Wenninger was a sixth-round selection in the 2023 draft from the University of Illinois. He finished his junior season with a 6-4 record, a 4.59 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 76K/28BB across 80 1/3 innings.
