Las Vegas – Peter Alonso, 1B
Age: 23
Week Stats: .261/.357/.739, 3B, 3 HR, 8 RBI
Season Stats: .275/.402/.547, 16 2B, 3B, 24 HR, 83 RBI
With Dominic Smith being sent down to Las Vegas, Alonso was going to effectively go head-to-head against his main competition for first base at the Major League level. Alonso responded by having his best stretch in Las Vegas while him not only hitting for power, but showing his hustle by hitting an inside-the-park homer.
Binghamton – Levi Michael, UTIL
Age: 27
Week Stats: .348/.464/.478, 3 2B, 3 RBI, SB
Season Stats: .302/.389/.475, 25 2B, 2 3B, 10 HR, 32 RBI, 10 SB
Things have taken an interesting turn in the very surprising season for the Twins former first round pick with Michael now getting time in center field. Perhaps, this is an acknowledgement he’s far better than anyone every imagined he could be, and this is a sign the Mets organization is going to at least give him a chance to prove himself beyond Double-A. This is a situation which bears watching.
St. Lucie – Andres Gimenez, MI
Age: 19
Week Stats: .444/.444/.556, 2B, 2 SB
Season Stats: .282/.348/.432, 20 2B, 4 3B, 6 HR, 30 RBI, 28 SB
Gimenez has impressed many this season, which has led to him either making or vaulting up Top 100 prospect lists. One of the big reasons was the strides he continues to make despite his being 3.4 years younger than the competition. Given his play in the Florida State League, and the improvements he’s made, he has earned a promotion to Double-A Binghamton where he will really get a chance to impress.
Columbia – Tony Dibrell, RHP
Age: 22
Week Stats: 1-0, 2.57 ERA, 1.143 ERA, 12.9 K/9
Season Stats: 4-5, 3.38 ERA, 1.335 WHIP, 10.5 K/9
In his lone start of the week, Dibrell allowed just two earned in seven innings while striking out 10. That’s the second double digit strikeout game for the year for a pitcher who has shown an ability to put batters away. In fact, Dibrell is currently ranked fourth in the South Atlantic League in strikeouts. Perhaps even more impressive is Dibrell making strides to cut down on his walks as he has only yielded one walk over his past two starts.
Brooklyn – Ross Adolph, OF
Age: 21
Week Stats: .350/.364/.450, 2 2B, RBI, SB
Season Stats: .279/.364/.452, 3 2B, 6 3B, HR, 19 RBI, 6 SB
The Mets 12th round draft pick from this year’s draft was the top hitter in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), and so far he has shown those skills will translate to professional baseball. The athletic outfielder has a hit in seven of his last eight games with four extra base hits.
Kingsport – Shervyen Newton, SS
Age: 19
Week Stats: .214/.421/.429, HR, 2 RBI
Season Stats: .290/.407/.514, 10 2B, 3B, 4 HR, 21 RBI, SB
Considered a sleeper prospect in the Mets farm system, Newton is continuing to make improvements to his game. So far this year, he has already surpassed his career high in homers, and he has an excellent 17.6 percent walk rate. It should then come as no surprise he’s the Appalachian League leader in walks. He is the league leader in doubles, while ranking in the top 10 in runs (26), RBI, and total bases (55).
Gulf Coast – Ronny Mauricio, SS
Age: 17
Week Stats: .300/.364/.550, 3 2B, 3B, 3 RBI
Season Stats: .336/.344/.531, 10 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 23 RBI, SB
Mauricio has continued his incredible start to his professional career with him reaching base in all but one of the 28 games he has played. His name is all across the top 10 offensive categories with him leading the league in hits (38) and total bases (60). One interesting development is with him drawing more walks, his OBP has finally surpassed his batting average.
Dominican Summer League – Cesar Loaiza, LHP
Age: 20
Week Stats: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.500 WHIP, 15.8 K/9
Season Stats: 4-0, 0.70 ERA, 0.905 WHIP, 11.4 K/9
Signed as a 19 year old pitcher from Venezuela last month, Loaiza has impressed. Of note, Loaiza is in the midst of a streak where he has not allowed an earned run over his last 22.2 innings.
