Savannah 7, Augusta 2

Luis Cessa, in his first start of the year, held the Augusta Green Jackets in check into the seventh inning to help the Savannah Sand Gnats earn a 7-2 win Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Cessa, who worked six and two thirds innings, became the first Savannah starter to pitch into the seventh inning in 2013.

The Gnats (3-3) broke a 1-1 tie with a single run in the second inning when 2B Chad Zurcher singled home LF Gregory Pron and never trailed again.

Savannah added two runs in the third inning to build a 4-1 advantage. 1B Jayce Boyd, who was 3-for-5, began the inning with a double to center field. He came home on SSPhilip Evans’ sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, 3B Cole Frenzel doubled home DH Kevin Plawecki.

Boyd finished 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. The Mets’ sixth round pick in the 2012 draft has hit safely in all six Gnats games, going 12-for-21 for a .545 batting average.

The Green Jackets (4-2) took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the first when 3B Mitchell Delfino doubled home SS Matt Duffy.

The Gnats evened the game with a run in the bottom of the first. CF Brandon Nimmowas hit by a pitch, and came around to score on an RBI double up the right-centerfield gap by Plawecki.

Cessa settled in after allowing the first inning run to keep the Green Jackets off the board for the next five innings. He allowed an unearned run in the seventh on a Zurcher throwing error.

The Gnats picked up a run back in the bottom of the seventh and added two in the eighth to complete the game’s scoring.

The Gnats and Green Jackets play the deciding game of their three-game set Wednesday night at 7:05 at Historic Grayson Stadium. Savannah will send RHP Matt Bowman (0-0, 3.38) to the hill against Augusta RHP Martin Agosta (1-0, 0.00).
