With the big league club getting the day off, all eyes turn to Triple-A Syracuse as Clay Holmes continues to work back from a fractured fibula. Per Mets manager Andy Green, he will pitch about three innings. However, those three innings will be closely monitored, and not just by the Mets. Holmes’ name has come up in recent trade discussions as the deadline looms, and it’s certainly a seller’s market.
As of Wednesday, reports surfaced the Mets were more inclined to trade Holmes rather than offering him an extension, and the Chicago White Sox have recently been attached to Holmes.
Holmes fractured his fibula back in mid-May after getting nailed by a Spencer Jones comebacker against the Yankees. Before the injury, Holmes pitched to an elite 2.39 ERA in nine starts (52.2 IP). He allowed just three home runs, 18 walks and struck out 45 in that time.
