In their first of two games against the Yankees on Sunday, the Mets lost a devastating game by a score of 8-7. After carrying a 7-2 lead into the final inning with one out left to get, the Mets allowed five runs and one more in the eighth to hand the Yankees the win. Michael Conforto, Robinson Canoand Pete Alonso all collected two RBIs on the afternoon. Edwin Diaz received his first loss and fourth blown save on the season.

Pitching

Rick Porcello got the start in game one of the doubleheader and had a much better performance than his previous outing. Despite finding himself in early trouble in the first, Porcello limited damage to just one run in the inning and settled down afterward, not giving up another run until the fourth. Porcello would finish his afternoon on the mound after five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks.

Justin Wilson relieved Porcello in the sixth, pitching a nearly perfect inning outside of one walk.

Jared Hughes got the ball in the seventh inning to try and close out the game, but was unable to get the final out of the inning. After loading the bases with two outs, Hughes allowed a two-run single to Luke Voit to narrow the Mets lead to 7-4.

Edwin Diaz came in for Hughes to try and get the final out, but blew the save and collected the loss instead. After a wild pitch brought in the fifth run for the Yankees, Diaz gave up a game-tying two-run home run to Aaron HicksIn the eighth inning, Diaz allowed the game winning single to Gio Urshela

Offense

Pete Alonso got the Mets offense rolling in the fourth with an RBI single to drive in J.D. DavisWilson Ramos followed up with an RBI single of his own to drive in Robinson Cano to tie the game 2-2.

In the fifth, Robinson Cano gave the Mets a 4-2 lead with a two-run home run, driving in Dominic Smith

Michael Conforto joined the offensive party in the sixth, driving in Wilson Ramos and Andres Gimenez with an RBI double to increase the Mets lead to 6-2. Pete Alonso drove in the seventh run for the Mets with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.

On Deck

The Mets look to salvage a win in the second game of their double header. Seth Lugo will get the start against Delvi Garcia. The game can be seen on SNY or ESPN.
