Mike Carp is pushing his way onto the minds of the Mets hierarchy with every passing day and every line drive hit.
His stock had been on the rise a couple of years ago but then cooled off after an injury riddled 2007 season. He was hardly heard of again until the start of this season. He is now on fire and there’s no telling if this torrid hitting streak will land him on the roster of the New York Mets before the All Star Break when all is said and done.
Carp was the Mets ninth round selection in the 2004 draft. The 21-year old was an All American coming out of high school but did little to distinguish himself since joining the Mets until this year. His best season came in 2006 when he hit .287 with 17 homers and 88 RBI in 491 at-bats at high-A St. Lucie.
In Spring Training he quickly impressed manager Willie Randolph with his strong work ethic and willingness to take advice and improve his performance. Mets coaches were thrilled by his ability to drive the ball to all fields and his apparent plate discipline. Randolph once compared him to former Yankee and current National, Nick Johnson.
Mike Carp is currently tearing it up for the Binghamton Mets with a batting average of .442 in 77 at-bats. He has a whopping .727 slugging percentage which accounts for his 5 homers and 56 total bases. He is striking out in less than 15% of his plate appearances and owns an on-base percentage of .482. Amazing…
I’m sure that he has earned himself a promotion to New Orleans and look forward to seeing the same hitting trends continue upon his arrival. He is a determined young man who could be the heir apparent to Carlos Delgado sooner rather than later.
If he hits like this after a month in New Orleans, Mets Merized will begin the “Bring Up Carp” chants at Shea and get a petition to Omar and Willie started on this site immediately.
