Earlier this afternoon, Mike Francesa of WFAN reported that the Mets have made offers to free agents Bengie Molina and Jason Bay.

This has now been confirmed by David Lennon of Newsday, as well as Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

According to Francesa, the Mets made the decision to target Jason Bay instead of Matt Holliday, because they believe Bay’s swing and hitting style will translate better at Citi Field based on the results of a study and research.

I don’t pretend to be an expert, but if the Mets have taken the time to research this so that they can make a better personnel decision, than I applaud them for it. I’m sure the detractors will come out screaming, but they aren’t the ones footing the bill.

Signing Jason Bay to a 4-year deal would be a significant improvement in leftfield and in the middle of a punch-less lineup.

Let Scott Boras peddle his 7-8 year Matt Holliday proposal to some other poor soul…

Last season, Bay batted .267 with 36 homeruns and 119 RBI with the Red Sox. He also drew 94 walks which led to a .384 on-base percentage, and his .921 OPS would have led the Mets by a huge margin.
