FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE
The Bradenton Marauders ate the St. Lucie Mets’ lunch last night, destroying them by a score of 10-0 in Game Two of their best-of-three series. The series is now even at one game apiece.
Bradenton RHP Brett Lorin along with three relievers, hurled a 2-hit shutout, combining to strikeout 6 and walking just 1. The game’s only hits for the Mets were a single by Pedro Zapata, and a double by Gilbert Gomez.
St. Lucie starter Zack Wheeler looked pretty good for three innings, then gave up 4 runs in the fourth, the big blow coming from LF Adalberto Santos who doubled in the third and fourth runs of the game. Wheeler was replaced with two outs in the 4th, and was followed in the game by four different relievers who were all scored upon. After Bradenton’s 4 run 4th, they scored single runs in the 5th and 6th innings, and two runs each in the 8th and 9th innings.
The Bradenton attack was led by Santos (2 RBI’s) and C Ramon Cabrera (1 RBI) with three hits apiece, and DH Calvin Anderson (3 RBI’s) and SS Benji Gonzalez had two hits apiece.
The decisive Game Three is scheduled for tonight in Bradenton, at 6:30 PM. The starter for St. Lucie will be RHP Greg Peavey, who went 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA for the St. Lucie Mets this year.
SOUTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE
The Augusta Green Jackets, defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats by a score of 4-1 in Game One of the SAL play-offs, last night. The Green Jackets, a farm team of the S.F. Giants, now lead in the best-of-three game series 1-0.
Sand Gnats ace Angel Cuan locked up with Augusta’s Michael Kickham in a good old-fashioned pitcher’s duel for the first six innings. Cuan scattered 6 hits over 6 innings, but was never under duress, as no base-runner ever got past second base. He struck out 5 and didn’t walk a batter.
In the 7th, Cuan gave way to 6’5″ lefty Chase Huchingson, the free-agent signing this year, out of Central Arkansas. He started out fine getting the first two batters, and then the wheels came off. Two walks, a single and a three-run homer, by DH Adam Duvall made it Augusta 4, Savannah 1. That would be it for the scoring, as Augusta hung on to win by the same score.
Kickham, the 6’4″ LHP out of Missouri State U., was the S.F. Giants 6th round pick in the 2010 draft. He matched zeros with Cuan until the fifth inning, and his line for the game reads: 6.1 IP, 1 ER, 4 HIts, 1 BB, 4 K’s. Three relievers followed and kept Savannah off the board for the final 2.2 innings.
The scoring began in the top of the 5th inning, with the Sand Gnats drawing first blood. First-baseman Joe Bonfe led off the inning with a triple to LF. After Blake Forsythe struck-out, Aderlin Rodriguez grounded to third, and Bonfe running on contact, scored as the play went to first. The Savannah attack was led by Juan Nieves and Rafael Fernandez who had two hits apiece.
Game Two is Friday night in Savannah, with the probable pitchers: Vorhees, NJ native RHP Shawn Sanford for Augusta, against New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana, who will be pitching for the Sand Gnats. Game time is 7:05 pm.
NEW YORK PENN LEAGUE
Last night’s Game One between the Brooklyn Cyclones and the Staten Island Yankees was rained out and will be played Thursday night, weather permitting, in Brooklyn. The starting pitchers will be RHP Bryan Mitchell for the Yankees, and RHP Marco Camarena for the Cyclones.
