Adam Rubin of ESPN New York is reporting that despite having a pair of major-league-ready young catchers, the New York Mets are telling teams they are interested in acquiring a backup catcher to break camp with the big-league club.
As reported this morning, the Mets are debating whether Kevin Plawecki should open the season at Triple-A Las Vegas and go with Johnny Monell as the backup to Travis d’Arnaud.
Rubin cautions that there is no guarantee that the Mets can acquire the type of backup catcher they are looking for – preferably someone that can offer the Mets a better offense profile than what they currently have internally.
Plawecki, 25, hit .219 in 233 at-bats last season, while Monell, 30, has a .167 average in over a smaller sampling across two seasons.
Rubin does not mention any available options.
