The Mets want to keep one member of the 2021 outfield for a long time.

According to SNY’s Andy Martino, the Mets are interested in discussing a contract extension with Brandon Nimmo.

He expects it to occur after the assumed MLB lockout.

Nimmo is one of the players the Mets will surely tender a contract to before MLB’s 8 p.m. deadline tonight. He’s in his final year of arbitration.

Nimmo is expected to play a corner outfield spot this season after playing center throughout 2020. New acquisitions Starling Marte (four-year, $78 million) and Mark Canha (two-year, $26.5 million with a third-year club option) will man center and a corner spot, respectively.

Nimmo shined bright for the Mets when healthy. He excelled in the leadoff spot putting together a slash line of .292/.401/.473 in 92 games. He dealt with hand and hamstring injuries.

Nimmo has a 136 OPS+ since 2018 across 356 games and has proven to be an above-average defender in center. He’s more than deserved an extension by the Mets.
