Baseball Prospectus released their Top 101 Prospects for the 2015 season, and once again the Mets figure very prominently with Noah Syndergaard leading our contingent with an impressive No. 9 ranking overall.
Following Syndergaard at No. 33 is left-handed pitcher Steven Matz who has resurrected his top prospect billing after a spectacular performance last season. No prospect has seen his stock climb higher than Matz who wasn’t on anyone’s top 100 last year at this time.
Appearing next on the list at No. 69 is outfielder Brandon Nimmo, followed by shortstop Amed Rosario at No. 78, catcher Kevin Plawecki at No. 80, and finally second baseman Dilson Herrera at No. 82.
Most of the top lists have pretty much honed in on these same six prospects with the exception of Keith Law who is extremely high on Michael Conforto.
Either way, all these lists are very subjective and there’s no real science attached to them. But what makes this so impressive for the Mets is that there now seems to be a huge consensus that we have 6-7 prospects that can be future stars in the major leagues.
Of course not all of them are going to hit and that’s why there’s strength in numbers. In years past when we only had 1-2 players on these lists, we’d be lucky if one of them actually emerged as a star.
But with a system that is now ranked 4th best in baseball it’s conceivable that from within this group of 6-7 highly ranked prospects, the odds are we’ll have at least three potential All Star caliber players coming to Citi Field in the near future and that’s what makes all of this so exciting.
