Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Mets and Blue Jays have reached out to free agent center fielder Lorenzo Cain.
Cain, 31, is going to be a big topic of discussion this winter as he is a highly touted player who excels both in the field and at the plate, not to mention on the base paths. In 2017 he hit .300/.363/.440 with 15 home runs, 49 RBIs, and 26 stolen bases.
The center fielder will likely fetch a four-or-five-year deal in the $15 million per year range. That is within the Mets’ budget, but even that depends on what else they plan on spending this offseason.
MMO’s own Chris Gaine recently wrote an article about why he thinks Cain and the Mets are a perfect match.
The Mets certainly need a speedy player who they can rely on at the top of the order, but as I wrote earlier today, I believe the outfield is not an area that needs a big-time boost and the Mets should spend their money elsewhere this offseason.
