Per Andy Martino of SNY, the Mets, Marlins, and Padres have discussed a three-team trade.

In this scenario, the Mets would get J.T. Realmuto “plus”, the Padres would get Noah Syndergaard, and the Marlins would get many young players.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports further that the Mets “have discussed three-team trades with multiple teams trying to get Realmuto, at this point to no avail.” We know the Yankees are another team with whom a three-team deal was discussed.

It is clear that Brodie Van Wagenen is exploring every avenue possible in acquiring the All-Star catcher, in this case without losing any position players. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mets’ preference is to have a catcher that is both offensively and defensively strong, meaning either Realmuto or Yasmani Grandal. Van Wagenen’s aggressiveness in talking about Realmuto could mean Grandal is out of the Mets’ price range, especially after signing Jeurys Familia.

Sherman also reports that if Realmuto or Grandal cannot be acquired, the priority would be defense, pursuing Martin Maldonado before an offensive catcher like Wilson Ramos, for example.

Realmuto, 27, has two years of team control left. In 2018, he hit .277/.340/.484 with 21 home runs and 74 RBIs in 125 games. He was elected to his first All-Star game and won his first Silver Slugger award.
