The New York Mets have checked in on numerous second base trade options including Cesar Hernandez, Brian Dozier, Ian Kinsler, Dee Gordon and Jason Kipnis according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports.
Heyman also notes that Kinsler makes a ton of sense given he’s only under contract for one season but the Mets are not currently engaged in trade talks with the Detroit Tigers for the veteran.
Hernandez, 27, is a name we haven’t yet heard connected to the Mets as they look to upgrade at the second base position. The switch-hitter slashed .294/.373/.421 with 26 doubles, six triples, nine home runs, 85 runs scored and 15 stolen bases for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Hernandez has posted back-to-back seasons of at least 3 WAR with 3.3 in 2016 and 3.1 this past season. After a good season defensively in 2016 at second (4 DRS, 12.6 UZR/150) he struggled there in 2017 with -2 DRS and 3.1 UZR/150.
Cesar is projected to make $4.7 million through arbitration in 2018 according to MLB Trade Rumors and is under contract for three seasons.
The Mets currently have Wilmer Flores, T.J. Rivera, Matt Reynolds and Gavin Cecchini as in-house options at second with Asdrubal Cabrera likely starting at third base.
