On Saturday, the New York Mets completed a doubleheader sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies and handed the NL East champions their eighth straight loss.
Game 1 – Mets 2, Phillies 1
R.A. Dickey got everyone’s attention when he took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning. Center fielder Shane Victorino broke it up with a hard hit double for the Phillies first hit of the game, and after a Ryan Howard single the Phillies were up 1-0.
The Amazins came right back to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to a solo homerun by Val Pascucci, his first homer since Oct. 2, 2004.
David Wright smacked a big double in the eighth inning to drive home Ruben Tejada with the winning run of the game.
They would eventually comeback and win the game 2-1, and while Dickey didn’t figure into the decision, he concluded his season with his 12th straight quality start, a career best.
I don’t know about you, but I’m loving the fact that Dickey will be back again next season thanks to the 2-year deal he got from Alderson before the season.
Game 2 – Mets 6, Phillies 3
In the second game the Phillies got off to a quick 3-0 lead off Mets starter Dillon Gee, but the Mets came roaring back in the third inning with a five run outburst after a costly error by right fielder Hunter Pence.
Jason Pridie had a couple of hits, and Josh Thole drove in a pair of runs in the game.
Gee allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits and two walks, while striking out two over six innings, but picked up his team leading 13th win of the season in the Mets’ 6-3 victory over the Phillies.
Nice job by the bullpen in this one as Bobby Parnell retired all five batters he faced, Daniel Herrera retired his only batter, and Manny Acosta got three outs for his fourth save of the season and second of the day. Nicely done.
Sweep The Phils!
The Mets go for the sweep of the series Sunday afternoon as Mike Pelfrey (7-12, 4.58 ERA) takes on Roy Halladay (18-6, 2.41) at 2:10 pm.
Doubleheader Notes
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time the Mets rallied to win both games in a doubleheader was on August 15, 2000 at Shea Stadium against the Rockies.
Terry Collins indicated that RF Lucas Duda (headaches) and reliever Jason Isringhausen (back) will both probably miss the rest of the season.
Collins also said that Miguel Batista is likely to start the season finale against the Reds, while Saturday’s starter R.A. Dickey and Sunday’s starter Mike Pelfrey would be in the bullpen.
Jose Reyes got his average up to a league leading .330 after the first game, but as he sat out the nightcap, Ryan Braun passed him for the lead by going 2-for-3 to raise his average to .331.
