Mets Farm Report: June 27th, 2011

Buffalo Bisons 4 – Norfolk Tides 3

Baby steps for Mark Cohoon. While today wasn’t a great start, it was his best start so far in Triple-A and a quality start to say the least. After giving up five earned runs and six earned runs twice in his first three starts he has only given up three earned runs in the last three starts. I am not sure what is more concerning, the 12:14 BB:K ratio over 30 innings or the fact that he has given up a home run in every single start this year. Still, like I said I’ll take the baby steps he has made over the last few starts. Cohoon’s last inning was his only 1-2-3 inning of the entire night. Ryota Igarashi hasn’t given up a run since June 6th…

Nick Evans wasted no time in extending his hitting streak to 17 games by picking up a single in the beginning of a big 1st inning. Steady Michael Fisher got things going with a single, Evans followed with a single, and Val Pascucci walked to load the bases with one out. All three would come around to score. Fisher and Evans scored on a Jason Botts single, while Pascucci came around on a Luis Hernadez two-out single, although Botts did get thrown out at home on the play. The Bisons would do their only other scoring in the 2nd inning when Evans brought home Bubba Bell on a ground out with the bases loaded. Not a pretty RBI, but it turned out to be the game winner.

Binghamton Mets 1 – Erie SeaWolves 7

Brandon Moore got flat out spanked. He could not buy an out in the first two innings. Moore let up three runs and six hits in the 1st and while two of the runs were unearned because of a Josh Satin error, he actually received some help from Jean Luc Blaquiere who caught a runner stealing second. He ‘only’ let up four hits in the 2nd inning, but also walked two and ave up four runs thanks in part to a three-run home run. Josh Stinson was actually great in relief. He was perfect through two and picked up five groundball outs.

The B-Mets were actually held hitless through 5.2 innings until Josh Satin broke it up with a single. In the 7th they had runners at second and third with no outs, but strikeouts to Blaquiere and Eric Campbell killed the threat. Salomon Manrqiuez had to be that guy and break up the shutout with one out in the 9th inning, oh and then Blaquiere and Campbell struckout back-to-back again.

St. Lucie Mets 5 – Bradenton Marauders 2

Darin Gorski was struggling early on in this game before making adjustments and settling down. There were runners on the corner in the 1st, but he got a huge strikeout to help him out of the inning. In the 2nd he gave up a home run that would be his only blemish in the runs column. And then in the 3rd Cesar Puello had to save him when he flashed his plus arm by gunning out a runner at home who was trying to score from second on a single. There was no trouble after that. He was 1-2-3 in the 4th and 5th, while allowing just a single in the 6th. I am thinking of starting a pool of when Josh Edgin will give up an earned run.

Jefry Marte gave Gorski the early lead to work with by picking up a two out single in the first. Gorski did cough the lead up, but then Cesar Puello created a run in the 2nd by demonstrating his leadoff skills. Puello stole second, evidently distracted the pitcher and moved to third on a wild pitch, and then came home to score on a ground out to first base. Cory Vaughn is absolutely loving St. Lucie. He belted his second home run today and tapping back into that power from Brooklyn. By the way, even with the change of level he is still getting hit by pitches. Can not be a coincidence anymore.

Savannah Sand Gnats 13 – Rome Braves 8

Possibly the least impressive slugfest 13-run performance you will see out of a team. The Gnats put up 13 runs on 12 hits, but had just two extra base hits and were aided by six walks, two hit batters, and two errors. In a way you can give credit to the Gnats hitters for taking pitches and working counts, but it doesn’t sound like Braves’ pitchers were even getting near the strikezone. In the 4th inning the Gnats were able to put up four runs on three singles. A hit batter, two walks, and wild pitch will do that for you and is exactly what I mean about the Rome pitchers just being flat out awful. The one big hit the Gnats had was a bases loaded triple by Rafael Fernandez in the 8th inning.

Gonzalez German had his second straight outing where he couldn’t make it out of the 3rd inning right after how I talked about how he had gone deep in so many games pitching 6+ innings. Murphy’s Law. With this last start his season has gone from being pretty good to mediocre at best. He was just giving up hit after hit today. Things were close to getting out of hand if he was not pulled. Chase Huchingson is pitching in relief again for some reason and earned the victory. His 1.92 ERA isn’t good enough to get a full-time starting role I guess.
