Buffalo Bisons 0 Norfolk Tide 9

This was very close to being a great start for Mark Cohoon, and considering the results of his last few starts, this game has to be considered a success. The only real trouble that Cohoon faced the whole game was in the 4th inning. His command fell apart in the inning, he walked two men, and then gave up a two-out single for the first run of the ball game. It was a two batter sequence in the 6th inning that left the bad mark on his night. He faced two batters in the inning and gave up a single and home run before being pulled. Then things went downhill from that point forward with the bullpen.

My favorite unsuccessful pitcher in baseball, Rick ‘The Dutch Hammer’ Vandenhurk, was too much for the depleted Bisons offense to handle. Nick Evans was the only batter with multiple hits and picked up the only extra base hit of the game. Michael Fisher (walk and single) was the only other member of the offense to reach base safely twice.

Stars of the Game: 1. Nick Evans (2-for-2, 2B, 2 BB) (22pts) 2. Michael Fisher (1-for-3, BB, K) (23pts) 3. Mark Cohoon (L, 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, SO) (1pt)

It is pretty impressive to see Robert Carson out duel a prospect of Manny Banuelos’s level. Carson was actually perfect the first time through the order with six strikeouts. He faced just three batters in the 4th thanks to a caught stealing, but it was the 5th when he seemed to tire out and gave up a pair of home runs. Understandable considering it was his first game pitching since May 31st. With Carson’s return Collin McHugh was regulated to bullpen duties and earned the “save” by pitching four innings and giving up just one hit, a solo home run.

Brahiam Maldonado has Banuelos’s number, eh? This is the second time in a week that Maldonado has taken Banuelos deep. Valdespin picked up two more hits and is now sitting at a pretty .280 on the year. A crazy stat that every man in the lineup scored a run in the game. Josh Satin only got on base three more times today and has a .300/.400/.500 line as a second baseman. He really must have slept with someone’s daughter not to get a promotion yet. It just boggles my mind.

Stars of the Game: 1. Eric Campbell (1-for-3, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB) (17pts) 2. Josh Satin (2-for-4, 2B, R, BB) (51pts) 3. Robert Carson (W, 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 7 SO) (10pts)

This was easily the worst start of the year from Yohan Almonte. Almonte failed to strikeout anyone in five innings and gave up five runs on eight hits. Almonte gave up two home runs today and is up to seven on the year. For someone who is supposed to be a groundball pitcher that is a bit concerning. With his fastball/slider I think he would be best in the bullpen and the man who took over for him in this game should be in the rotation. Chase Huchingson was dazzling yet again. He allowed just a single in his three innings of work and struckout five. Huchingson has yet to give up a run in June.

Another meager performance from the offense. While the offense as a whole has underperformed the last few days, Wilfredo Tovar has been scorching. Two more hits has him at .471 over his last 10 games with seven runs scored and just two strikeouts. Aderlin Rodriguez committed his 22nd error of the season! Wowsers.

Stars of the Game: 1. Wilfredo Tovar (2-for-4, HBP, K) (14pts) 2. Joe Bonfe (3-for-4, 2B, K) (2pts) 3. Chase Huchingson (3 IP, H, 5 SO) (12pts)

Brooklyn Cyclones 5 Staten Island Yankees 3

A big win over the rival on opening day.

Eduardo Aldama was a bit wild in this start, but I expect bigger things from him for the rest of the season. I didn’t really get a good look at him this time around so hopefully I’ll get another chance to see him soon. Hunter Carnevale had some interesting mechanics with an extreme over the top delivery that caught my eye.

It was the 2010 draft picks that shined tonight. Danny Muno has the look of a good ball player. It was only one game, but he showed some good polish and I wouldn’t be shocked if he has a very good season for Brooklyn. Travis Taijeron was perfect at the plate picking up two hits and two walks. It is amazing the Cycloens were able to win.

Stars of the Game: 1. Travis Taijeron (2-for-2, 3B, 2 R, 2 BB) (3pts) 2. Danny Muno (2-for-4, 2B, R, RBI, HBP, K) (2pts) 3. Javier Rodriguez (1-for-3, 2 BB, K) (1pt)
