Buffalo Bisons 5 – Syracuse Chiefs 6

Mark Cohoon‘s peripherals are getting to a point that are almost laughable. His K/9 is all the way down to 4.04 and his BB/9 is up to 3.8. There are only three pitchers in baseball with a K/9 that low this year (Brad Penny, Carl Pavano, and Jeff Francis). Francis actually may just be a very good MLB comp for Cohoon, but Francis is only walking 1.83 per 9 so Cohoon is going to have to get his command under control to even become Francis. Last year Cohoon walked just 32 batters in 161.1 innings. This yer he has already walked 32 in 87.2 innings.

As far as this game went Cohhon was pretty successful because he allowed just two hits (double and triple) in his five innings, but both of those hits would score on sac flies. Ryota Igarashi blew the game big time in the 9th, but his streak of not giving up an earned run continues because of big time defensive issues. He led the inning of with what else, but a walk. On the sac bunt in the following at-bat Igarashi committed the first error of the inning by throwing the ball away. After getting a pop out, he got a ground ball to the shortstop with the infield drawn in, but Luis Figueroa couldn’t field it cleanly to try and cut off the tying run at home. Mike Nickeas then allowed a passed ball to give the Chiefs the lead and they would go on to increase their lead to two runs. Nickeas redeemed himself with a solo homerun in the bottom of the 9th to draw the Bisons within one and then they tied it up on a two-out single by Michael Fisher. In extra inning John Lujan would cough up the lead on a single following a Fisher error.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Michael Fisher: (1-for-6, RBI, 2 K)
  • Nick Evans: (2-for-5, BB, 2 K)

Binghamton Mets 4 – Bowie Baysox 7

I am going  to officially call it that Brandon Moore has it the Double-A wall. His 4.32 ERA isn’t awful, but when you include the unearned runs his ERA would jump up all the way to 6.24. He has just been way too hittable and could benefit from a move to the pen at this point. Today was no different story as he allowed a hit in all four innings, including multiple hits in three of the innings. Brad Holt relieved him for an inning with the usual control problems. Erik Turgeon just got blitzed in his inning of work. He would have allowed a grand slam had he not thrown a wild pitch just before giving up the three run homer.

The offense was dominated early on by the Baysox’s starter. A two-out RBI double by Allan Dykstra in the 1st was the only damage they did against him. They came close in the 4th when Travis Ozga had a two-out single with two on, but Dykstra got held up at third base. Matt Den Dekker beat out a double play in the bottom of the 9th to give Jordany Valdespin a hit and Valdespin rewarded him with a two-run homerun, his 9th of the season.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Matt Den Dekker: (0-for-5, R)
  • Jordany Valdespin: (2-for-5, HR, R, 2 RBI)
  • Josh Satin: (2-for-5, 2B, 2 R, K)
  • Allan Dylstra: (2-for-3, 2B, R, HBP, K)

Stars of the Game: 1. Jordany Valdespin (47pts) 2. Josh Satin (64pts) 3. Allan Dykstra (40pts)

St. Lucie Mets 4 – Bradenton Marauders 1 (F/5)

Well, Darin Gorski was in the middle of having his most wild start before the game was called, but the odds are he was being affected by the terrible weather conditions. For seemingly the first time all year his command got him into trouble. It was a base running blunder by the Marauders in the 3rd when the hitter didn’t execute a sac bunt and Francisco Pena caught it in foul territory and was able to double the runner off first who had strayed to far off first. Gorski went on to hit the next batter and then give up a single so had it not been for that mistake the inning could have went south. And yet with all that said he still had an outstanding start, which tells you all you need to know about what kind of season he is having.

Cesar Puello was in on almost all of the offense. He got hit by a pitch two start a two-out rally in the 2nd inning and came around to score on a Rylan Sandoval single. Then he had the big blow in the 4th inning with a two-run homerun. Juan Lagares, the FSL’s batting champion at the moment, scored the last run of the game coming in on an error after his leadoff double.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Juan Lagares: (2-for-3, 2B, R)
  • Jefry Marte: (1-for-3, K)
  • Wilmer Flores: (0-for-3, K)
  • Cory Vaughn: (0-for-2, R, BB)
  • Cesar Puello: (1-for-2, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, HBP)
  • Darin Gorski: (W, 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 5 SO, 2 HBP, 3:1 GO:AO)

Stars of the Game: 1. Cesar Puello (29pts) 2. Juan Lagares (39pts) 3. Darin Gorski (13pts)

Savannah Sand Gnats 8 – Augusta GreenJackets 0

Gonzalez German exceeded the amount of innings he pitched in his last two starts combined with his five scoreless innings. Gonzalez faced all his trouble in the his first and last innings of work. He allowed three consecutive singles with one out in the 1st, but got out of it with a strikeout swinging and groundout. Then in the 5th he gave up two singles and a walk with one out, but picked up the double play to get out of it. Yeah yeah, you want to limit Chase Huchingson‘s innings, but he continues to just dominate.

This game was all offense. Six consecutive men reached in the 2nd inning with two outs to score five runs and the only reason the innings even ended was because Aderlin Rodriguez got thrown out at home trying to score from second. A similar incident shortened their 6th inning when Alonzo Harris got thrown out at second base on his single trying to advance as the runner went home.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Wilfredo Tovar: (2-for-5, 2 R, K)
  • Darrell Ceciliani: (2-for-5, R, RBI, 2 K)
  • Aderlin Rodriguez: (3-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI)
  • Chase Huchingson: (2 IP, 2 H, BB, 3 SO, 2:1 GO:AO)

Stars of the Game: 1. Aderlin Rodriguez (40pts) 2. Blake Forsythe (26pts) 3. Darrell Ceciliani (35pts)

Brooklyn Cyclones 5 – Staten Island Yankees 6

I am so glad I left just before that 9th inning collapse. Eduardo Aldama was dominating hitters with his fastball and almost gunslinger deliver tonight. The Cyclones blew this game when they failed to score when the Yankees gave them a chance on a generous “hit” by the scoring judge to Brandon Brown.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Ismael Tijirena: (3-for-5, R)
  • Javier Rodriguez: (1-for-5, HR, R, 3 RBI, K)
  • Richard Lucas: (2-for-4, 2B, HBP)
  • Brian Harrison: (1-for-5, K)
  • Eduardo Aldama: (4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 9 SO, 3:3 GO:AO)

Stars of the Night: 1. Brandon Brown (6pts) 2. Eduardo Aldama (4pts) 3. Javier Rodriguez (18pts)
