St. Lucie Mets 6 – Lakeland Tigers 5

He wasn’t even awful tonight, and yet this is by far Darin Gorski‘s worst start of the year—which just proves how good he has been. Oh and by the way he still picked up the win. Gorski was going good until the 3rd when he put runners on the corners. He picked off the runner at first and got him into a rundown, but before the runner was tagged out to end the inning the runner from third scored. Gorski proceeded to get hurt by two swings of the bat in the next two innings, with a solo homer in the 4th and two-run shot in the 5th. Eric Niesen has quietly made improvements and has now not allowed a walk or run over his last six innings. He has also allowed just two hits and struckout six over that time. Zoiks! Make that back-to-back appearances Josh Edgin has given up a run. Cut him now.

Two-out hitting was the name of the game. Stefan Welch had a two-out single in the 4th to score Pedro Zapata, Rylan Sandoval delivered a two-out ground-rule double in the 5th to score Cory Vaughn (who got hit by another pitch), and then Vaughn stepped to the plate with two outs and two on in the 6th and smacked a three-run homer. St. Lucie went on to load the bases with two-outs in the inning, but couldn’t pick up another huge hit to give them a comfortable lead. Wilmer Flores continued the two-out hitting in the 7th with a single to score Juan Lagares, the eventual winning run.

Savannah Sand Gnats 0 – Lexington Legends 2

Taylor Whitenton had allowed just a single to the second batter of the ballgame up until the second inning. That is when he gave up a single and walk-off homer to close the game and ruin his terrific start. I had never realized how much arms and legs Whitenton had going in his deliver, which explains why his stuff plays up a bit at this level. When he was keeping the slider tight it looked like a very good pitch just inconsistent, but better than advertised.

Not much to speak of with the offense. They got runners on, but failed to to get the big hit numerous times. Wilfredo Tovar did turn a sick double play in the 2nd inning. He showed those exceptional hands and quickness at short.

Savannah Sand Gnats 7 – Lexingon Legends 3

Chase Huchingson got the “start” in the second half of the double header, but only lasted three innings. He was very good once again and allowed just a hit and two walks. Huchingson struckout three and picked up all his other outs on the ground. Huchingson picked up two of the four double plays by Gnats pitchers. Guillaume Leduc relieved him to earn the win. He wasn’t good, but he was effective and also picked up two double plays. Gabrial Zavala had to be that guy to blow the shutout in the 7th by giving up a homerun plus two other runs, although Hamilton Bennett allowed an inherited runner to score.

With two on in the 5th, Wilfredo Tovar singled, but Alonzo Harris got thrown out at home and the run didn’t score. The Gnats came back in the inning with back-to-back walks to score the first run of the game and then two more scored on an error on a ball hit by Albert Cordero. Aderlin Rodriguez hit a grand slam in the 7th that turned out to be huge because of the runs given up in the bottom of the inning.
