Murphy Daniel

Daniel Murphy will not be activated from the disabled list when eligible on Saturday as was expected.

General manager Sandy Alderson said the Mets are now eyeing Tuesday’s series opener at Milwaukee for Murphy’s return. (ESPN New York)

Murphy has been playing in extended spring training games at Port St. Lucie since Friday, and has yet to begin a rehab assignment.

But Alderson expects that will happen soon and that Murphy will play a few rehab games at Double-A or Triple-A before being activated.

Murphy is expected to take over at third base upon his return while Dilson Herrera stays put at second base.

Daniel Murphy, who is out with a strained left quadriceps, will play in an extended spring training game on Friday, Sandy Alderson told reporters today

Murphy will not run the bases on Friday, but just take at-bats and play in the field.

He is expected to miss the minimum 15 days and barring any setbacks, should be activated from the DL when his time is up. Murphy has been out since June 5.

This is good news for the Mets as Murphy was the team’s hottest hitter before pulling up lame, batting .341 with two HR and 15 RBI in 32 games.

As was feared, infielder Daniel Murphy has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quadriceps muscle.

Murphy suffered the injury while running the bases on Thursday night. He was pulled from the game and sent for an MRI this morning.

“I felt it tighten up, that’s about all I felt,” Murphy said after the game. “It is frustrating, but we’re not the only team in the big leagues dealing with injuries right now.”

Triple-A infielder Danny Muno will be activated to take Murphy’s place on the 25-man roster.

Muno, 26, has already had two short stints with the Mets, and has just one hit in 17 plate appearances with the team.

A 2014 All-Star for the Mets, Murphy has been one of the team’s hottest hitters of late and is hitting .283/.335/.433 with four home runs and a team high 29 RBI this season.
