The Mets designated reliever Casey Fossum for assignment immediatelty after Sunday’s loss to the Nationals and called up lefthanded reliever Ken Takahashi.

Fossum pitched in relief of Oliver Perez and allowed a pair of inherited runners to score and also was charged with one run on three hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings.

The Mets originally DFA’d Nelson Figuerora to make room for Fossum who was expected to become the second lefty in the Mets bullpen, but that notion quickly fizzled out.

Takahashi had a 0.77 ERA in 11 2/3 innings in Triple-A Buffalo.

I used to like Takahashi a lot and I think he could be very effective out of the pen for us.
