Per a team announcement, the New York Mets have designated right-handed pitcher Tyler Bashlor for assignment as the corresponding move to accommodate the addition of left-hander David Peterson.

Peterson, 24 and the Mets’ first-round draft pick in 2017 (20th overall), was selected from the team’s alternate training site in Brooklyn on Tuesday and will make his major league debut on Tuesday night at Fenway Park against the Red Sox.

Bashlor, 27, has shone at the minor league level (3.31 ERA) and thrived under former Mets pitching coach Phil Regan in the Dominican Winter League last season (1.80 ERA), but has mostly struggled when given opportunities with the big club.

Over 48 career major league appearances (54 innings), the Georgia southpaw owns a 5.33 earned run average with 45 strikeouts and 29 walks.

Bashlor’s four-seamer and slider held hitters to .204 and .238 batting averages against, respectively, last season, including a 32.4% whiff rate on the slider (23.6% whiff rate on the fastball). His seldom-used changeup was his least effective offering, getting teed up for a .300 BAA in 2019.

Because he was on the Mets’ 40-man roster, Bashlor must pass through irrevocable waivers before being assigned to the team’s alternate training site at MCU Park in Coney Island.

We’ll keep you posted with more information as it becomes available.
